Complete Heat Pump Services

A heat pump uses refrigerant to transfer heat rather than producing all of its heating through combustion or electric resistance. During warm weather, it moves heat from inside the building to the outdoors. During cooler weather, the process reverses and transfers available heat indoors.

Because the same equipment provides heating and cooling, a heat pump may operate during much of the year. Professional installation, regular maintenance and timely repairs are important for maintaining dependable performance through changing seasonal conditions.

B & B Heating and Air Conditioning provides support throughout the life of the system, from selecting new equipment to diagnosing performance problems and completing routine maintenance.

Heat Pump Installation

A successful heat pump installation begins with selecting equipment that matches the heating and cooling requirements of the property. The correct capacity cannot be determined by square footage alone. Insulation, windows, sun exposure, ceiling height, ductwork and other conditions can affect equipment selection.

Before recommending a system, we evaluate the property and discuss comfort priorities, efficiency goals and available equipment. Installation planning may also include reviewing:

  • Heating and cooling capacity
  • SEER2 cooling-efficiency ratings
  • HSPF2 heating-efficiency ratings
  • Single-stage and variable-capacity operation
  • Indoor and outdoor sound levels
  • Ductwork and airflow requirements
  • Thermostat and control compatibility
  • Electrical requirements
  • Equipment warranties

Proper sizing and installation help the new heat pump provide consistent comfort without unnecessary cycling or strain. Financing options are available for new heat pump installations. Ask our team about current financing information and application details when planning your project.

Heat Pump Repair

Heat pump problems may affect heating, cooling or both operating modes. Because heat pumps contain electrical, mechanical and refrigerant components, similar symptoms can have several possible causes.

Our diagnostic process may include checking the thermostat, electrical components, airflow, indoor and outdoor equipment, refrigerant-system performance and operating controls. After evaluating the system, we explain what was found and discuss the recommended heat pump repair.

Contact us if your heat pump is not maintaining the thermostat setting, produces weak airflow, makes unfamiliar noises or begins operating differently than usual.

Heat Pump Maintenance

Since a heat pump can provide comfort throughout the year, it may accumulate more operating hours than a cooling-only system. Regular maintenance gives an HVAC professional an opportunity to evaluate system operation, identify visible wear and address conditions that could reduce performance.

A maintenance visit may include inspecting accessible components, checking electrical connections, reviewing airflow, examining the outdoor equipment and testing system operation. The exact work performed can depend on the equipment and its condition.

Maintenance cannot prevent every possible breakdown, but it can help identify developing problems, support efficient operation and provide a useful record of the system’s condition.

Benefits of a Heat Pump System

A properly selected heat pump can provide several practical comfort advantages. Because one system handles both heating and cooling, homeowners can use the same equipment and thermostat controls throughout the year.

Potential benefits include:

  • Heating and cooling from one HVAC system
  • Efficient heat transfer rather than relying entirely on generated heat
  • Consistent temperature control
  • Options for variable-capacity operation
  • Compatibility with modern thermostats and controls
  • High-efficiency equipment choices
  • No onsite combustion during standard heat pump operation

The actual efficiency and operating cost of a heat pump depend on the equipment, installation, building conditions, thermostat settings, utility rates and seasonal temperatures. Our team can help you compare available systems based on your needs rather than relying on an efficiency rating alone.

Signs Your Heat Pump May Need Service

Heat pump problems do not always begin with a complete system failure. Changes in comfort, operating sound or energy use may indicate that the equipment needs professional attention.

Schedule an evaluation if you notice:

  • The heat pump is not heating or cooling properly
  • Airflow from the vents has become weak
  • Indoor temperatures are uneven
  • The system runs continuously
  • The equipment repeatedly starts and stops
  • The outdoor unit develops excessive ice
  • The system remains in defrost mode longer than expected
  • Unusual buzzing, grinding, rattling or clicking sounds
  • The thermostat does not control the system correctly
  • Energy use increases without an apparent explanation

A limited amount of frost on an outdoor heat pump can occur during cold-weather operation. The system normally uses a defrost cycle to remove it. Heavy ice that remains on the equipment or repeatedly returns may indicate an airflow, control, refrigerant or mechanical problem.

Common Heat Pump Problems

Heat Pump Is Not Heating

A heat pump that operates without delivering sufficient heat may have restricted airflow, a thermostat problem, an outdoor-unit issue or a problem within the refrigeration system. Outdoor temperature and defrost operation can also affect heating performance.

Heat Pump Is Not Cooling

Cooling problems may result from dirty coils, weak airflow, electrical issues, refrigerant-system problems or worn components. The system should be evaluated to identify the actual cause before parts are replaced.

Heat Pump Will Not Switch Modes

A heat pump uses controls and a reversing valve to change between heating and cooling. A thermostat, control or reversing-valve problem may prevent the system from changing modes correctly.

Heat Pump Runs Constantly

Extended operation may be normal during demanding weather, but a system that never reaches the thermostat setting may have an airflow problem, incorrect control setting, equipment issue or insufficient capacity for current conditions.

Heat Pump Makes Unusual Noises

New rattling, grinding, buzzing or repeated clicking should be investigated. These sounds may be associated with loose parts, electrical components, fan assemblies, motors or other internal components.

Should You Repair or Replace Your Heat Pump?

Many heat pump problems can be corrected with a practical repair. Replacement may deserve consideration when the equipment is older, has a history of recurring failures or requires a costly major repair.

Important factors include:

  • The age and general condition of the heat pump
  • The estimated repair cost
  • The system’s previous repair history
  • Current heating and cooling performance
  • Availability of compatible replacement parts
  • Current energy use
  • Indoor comfort and temperature consistency
  • The likelihood of additional repairs

Repair may be the appropriate choice when the equipment is otherwise dependable and the problem is limited to a serviceable component. Replacement may offer better long-term value when repair costs are becoming frequent or the system can no longer provide reliable heating and cooling.

If replacement is the better option, B & B Heating and Air Conditioning can help you compare available heat pumps and financing options for the installation.

Heat Pump Services for Lodi and Stockton

The Central Valley climate places demands on HVAC equipment during both hot summers and cooler winter weather. In Lodi and Stockton, a heat pump may operate through extended summer heat and then reverse operation to provide warmth during the heating season.

Properties in Lodi neighborhoods such as Lakewood, Sunwest and Reynolds Ranch can have different comfort needs based on age, construction and system design. The same is true in Stockton communities such as Brookside, Lincoln Village, Spanos Park and Morada. Equipment should be selected according to the property rather than the neighborhood or square footage alone.

B & B Heating and Air Conditioning provides heat pump services throughout:

  • Lodi
  • Stockton
  • Manteca
  • Tracy
  • Linden

How to Help Your Heat Pump Operate Reliably

Simple preventive steps can reduce unnecessary strain and help you notice developing problems sooner:

  • Check the air filter regularly and replace it when needed
  • Keep supply and return vents open and unobstructed
  • Remove leaves and debris from around the outdoor unit
  • Maintain appropriate clearance around the equipment
  • Watch for changes in heating or cooling performance
  • Do not ignore unusual sounds or persistent ice buildup
  • Schedule professional maintenance based on system use and manufacturer guidance

If the heat pump produces electrical odors, severe mechanical sounds or heavy ice that does not clear, turn the system off and arrange for professional service.

Frequently Asked Questions About Heat Pumps

Can a heat pump provide both heating and cooling?

Yes. A heat pump transfers heat out of the building during cooling operation and reverses the process to provide heating during cooler weather.

How often should a heat pump receive maintenance?

Because heat pumps can operate during both heating and cooling seasons, regular professional maintenance is important. The appropriate schedule depends on equipment use, condition and manufacturer recommendations.

Why does my heat pump have ice on the outdoor unit?

Light frost can occur during cold-weather operation and is normally removed through the system’s defrost cycle. Heavy or persistent ice may indicate a problem that requires professional evaluation.

How do I know whether to repair or replace my heat pump?

Consider the system’s age, condition, repair history, performance and the cost of the current repair. Replacement may provide better long-term value when failures are frequent or the equipment no longer provides reliable comfort.

Is financing available for heat pump installation?

Yes. B & B Heating and Air Conditioning offers financing options for new heat pump installations. Contact our team for current financing information and application details.

I use B&B heating and air for my HVAC system maintenance. they are always professional, personal, and on time! what really set them apart from the “big boys” that they are small, family owned, and operated for three generations, and they really know their stuff! One other thing that really impresses me, is that they are not running specials to service the system for some ridiculous price like $39, so they can simply come in and try to upsell. today, I had them look at my 25 year-old heating system, they made a few tweaks, did some cleaning, and measured pressures and system outputs. they recommended two capacitors that were functioning well but losing their power… Out the door for a full service with the two capacitors was $206.. Money well spent to ensure the continued operation of my entire system!!
